Absolutely nobody should be forced to live outside due to a lack of shelter or financial resources. Cascade supports shelter access to everyone, along with creating paths to self-reliance.
We hear the businesses and communities who are exhausted after years of losing our public spaces to the chronically addicted.
We get how housing is in short supply in our state. Our contention is with chronic drug addiction and how it results in homelessness and worse.
Our current state’s leadership claim the unsheltered crisis is really about lack of housing. They’re wrong and missing the point: chronic addiction results in people suffering on the streets and, ultimately — kills.
Over 5000 people have died from drug overdoses in King County since 2020. It’s estimated there are two drug OD deaths there every day.
Cascade supports government funded treatment for everyone ready to reclaim their lives. The problem with many chronically addicted is how they are treatment resistant. We support institutional care paths for individuals debilitated from prolonged and untreated addiction.
We deserve our public spaces which must open to all who respect them.
In a city synonymous with incarceration; local government, community groups and residents work together to provide stability, hope and a path towards independence for people struggling with homelessness and addiction.
