King County
By Saul Spady (June 11, 2025)
We are creating a Quality of Life Coalition — guiding our elected officials to the solutions we know are possible.
King County isn’t broken, but our shine has dimmed. We're smothered in bureaucracy and inertia; cracked by graffiti, addiction and tents. And we're tired of the excuses.
We’re still one of the greatest places in the world — home to Amazon, Microsoft, Costco, Heart, Nirvana, and Hendrix. But ask around: people are exhausted of paying Manhattan prices for one-tenth the safety, affordability, and cultural life.
So here’s what our coalition is going to do—starting now:
1. Public Camping Ban
We’ll file a charter amendment to ban public camping countywide. Every city—from Bellevue to Seattle—deserves a consistent, compassionate enforcement policy.
As citizens we’re going to gather 50,000 signatures to send a signal to the King County Council and every city within it. Now is the time to act on the crisis. Pass a public camping ban or lose your job.
2. Shelter Now
We’ll encourage the opening of 3,000+ low-barrier shelter beds using vacant buildings and underused public land.
3. Three Strikes = 6 Months Involuntary Rehab
If someone commits three addiction-related crimes—overdoses, theft, refusal of shelter—they’ll enter 6 months of involuntary treatment, followed by supportive housing, a caseworker, a job, and re-entry support.
4. The Fentanyl 5
If you deal fentanyl or meth and you’re not an addict—you’ll face 5 years in jail. Period. We’re not criminalizing drugs. We’re criminalizing death-by-drug-dealer.
Turnstiles in Transit
Over 50% of light rail riders don’t pay. Turnstiles are standard globally. They promote fairness, reduce racial bias in fare enforcement, and make transit safer for everyone.
High-Density Housing Near Transit
70%+ of voters support it: 20–25 story buildings within 10 blocks of light rail stations. We pair this with smart community benefit swaps:
Let’s grow the right way, using our multi billion dollar light rail as a catalyst for housing.
We file the public camping charter amendment.
We launch our 50,000-signature gathering campaign across King County — stay tuned for launch events.
We lobby every city to pass matching public camping bans now — not later.
We file a 3 Strikes = Rehab initiative for 2026.
We reshape the conversation in every city council and county race across Washington.
We don’t need permission. We don’t need partisanship. We just need you to believe we can send a message to our elected officials that now is the time for a Rational Revolution.
